Restoration of Listed or Period Property Windows

Sympathetic restoration for heritage windows

Restoring existing traditional windows comes with some significant risks. But in some cases, planning restrictions mean that restoring rather than replacing is the only option. The Kells approach ensures that you maintain the integrity of both your windows and your property.
We restore conservation sash windows, wooden box sash windows, traditional sliding sash windows and other types of windows for listed building renovation and period property restorations.

Our sympathetic approach ensures that your historic windows retain every detail of their traditional beauty.

Our craftsmen will carefully match every detail of your existing windows to maintain their historic features whilst enhancing their performance. We only use the highest quality materials to maintain the quality of your windows. Sashes and timber details that are beyond repair are reproduced in our joinery shop to match the rest of the window down to the last detail.

The typical Kells restoration process for sash windows is:

  1. Windows to be refurbished, i.e. sashes removed to Kells workshop where they will be completely stripped down using the latest in eco friendly technology.
  2. Existing sashes completely repaired.
  3. Existing window frames to be refurbished and paint burnt off, without removal of frames or window linings.
  4. All rotten and decayed timbers to be replaced are to match existing detail.
  5. Windows boarded up while sashes are away.
  6. Broken glass to be replaced where necessary.
  7. New sash cord and parting bead.
  8. Sashes to be rebalanced.
  9. New sash fasteners and sash lifts.
  10. Draught Proofing using Kells Window Perimeter Sealing System.  This system significantly reduces noise levels, draughts and dust ingress, ensuring efficiently sliding sashes and eliminates sash rattle whilst meeting the highest requirements.  The result is improved comfort levels and reduced energy consumption.
  11. Refurbished sashes to receive 2no coats of paint.**

The entire process is designed to minimise the potential disruption to your home or workplace. The process starts with thorough preparation and protection of the interior of your property with dust sheets and ends with a complete clean up of the area. We also aim to keep noise and disturbance to a minimum.
